Geomechanical Engineer for Excavated Materials Treatment

CERN, one of the world's largest and most respected scientific organizations, is seeking a highly skilled Geomechanical Engineer to join its Environment Group. As a key member of this team, you will play a crucial role in developing innovative solutions for excavated materials treatment.
**Job Summary:**
We are looking for a motivated and experienced Geomechanical Engineer to work on a project focused on the development of a modular excavated materials treatment plant. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in geomechanics, soil treatment, and large-scale construction projects.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Gather technical requirements for the treatment and processing of excavated materials;
- Work with industrial suppliers to design and develop a modular excavated materials treatment plant incorporating eco-design principles;
- Lead and manage prototyping activities to build an installation for the treatment and characterization of excavated materials;
- Participate in feasibility tests for excavated material reuse pathways;
- Liaise with the civil engineering team of the FCC study;
- Develop a preliminary management plan for excavated materials based on their quality and potential reuse pathways;
- Prepare detailed documentation from requirements gathering to final implementation.
**Requirements:**
- Masters degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field;
- Extensive experience in treating and processing excavated materials, especially mechanical sorting and granulometry reduction methods;
- Solid knowledge of documenting technical requirements using industry-standard tools;
- Familiarity with environmental regulations related to excavated material storage, transport, and reuse;
- Experience applying eco-design principles.
**Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of soil pollution remediation methods;
- Understanding of excavated material traceability systems;
- Familiarity with excavation material characterization techniques (PGNAA, NIR hyper-spectral analysis, XRF, etc.);
- Experience setting up excavated material management plans;
- Knowledge of environmental management standards;
- Technical competencies: Environmental Law, underground structure construction, geology, drafting documents;
- Behavioural competencies: problem-solving, autonomy, learning, communication, teamwork.
**Salary:** The estimated annual salary for this position is around €65,000 - €85,000 depending on experience, location, and qualifications. This figure may vary based on individual circumstances.
