CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading international research center in Geneva, Switzerland. Our mission is to advance our understanding of the universe and its fundamental particles.
SalaryWe offer a competitive salary ranging from 6212 to 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax). In addition to your monthly stipend, you will receive comprehensive health insurance coverage for yourself, your spouse, and children, as well as membership in the CERN Pension Fund.
Job DescriptionIn this role, you will be part of a cutting-edge project focused on investigating the properties of materials under extreme conditions. You will work closely with experts in plasmas, RF technology, vacuum technology, and surface science to understand the effect of plasma surface treatments on material resistance to electrical breakdown. Your task will involve developing novel techniques for measuring field-emitted electron currents and defining a plasma surface treatment that improves performance over untreated materials.
This project is part of the CLIC study, a large collaboration exploring the properties of materials under extreme conditions. As a key member of the team, you will work in close collaboration with experts from the Radio-Frequency group and the Mechanical and Materials Engineering group, as well as contribute to other projects aimed at exploring the behavior of materials for novel RF and high-voltage engineering applications.
Required Skills and Qualifications- You should have experience in material behavior under high electric fields.
- You should possess knowledge of vacuum and plasma technologies and surface analysis techniques.
- You must be fluent in English, and proficiency in French would be an advantage.
We offer a range of benefits, including:
- A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
- Comprehensive health insurance coverage for yourself, your spouse, and children.
- Membership in the CERN Pension Fund.
- Installation grant; family, child, and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
- 30 days of paid leave per year.
- On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
This position involves working in Radiation Areas and interventions in underground installations. You must be willing to adapt to the unique working environment at CERN. The duration of the contract is 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
