This position is located in the Statistics Service of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Statistician reports to the Chief of the Statistical Analysis team.

**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

- Organizes, designs, plans and carries out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data related to trade and sustainable development. This is done by selecting methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases.
- Participates in the development, implementation and management of statistical database(s) on trade and sustainable development.
- Provides training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information, particularly on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators.
- Participates in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research on trade and sustainable development statistics.
- Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports.
- Organizes and participates in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person.
- Guides, trains and supervises general service staff and consultants.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or related area is required.

Experience in working with international trade data is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Subsequent to the initial temporary appointment, new and successive temporary appointments may be granted for service in the same office or in a different office any number of times, for any duration, provided that the length of service does not exceed the period of 364 calendar days.
