Data Scientist

This position is located in the Technical Team of the Task Team Secretariat of the UN Global Crisis Response Group in the Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The incumbent reports to the Senior Coordinator of the Technical Team.
The Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance (GCRG) was established by the UN Secretary-General to coordinate the global response to the worldwide impacts of the war in Ukraine. A Task Team was established under UNCTAD to provide the group with data and analysis, a platform for the creation of partnerships, coordination, and policy recommendations with the support of a Technical Team. The future incumbent of this temporary position will be part of the Technical Team.
**Responsibilities**:
To support the work of the Technical Team, the Data Scientist will be responsible for the following duties:
- Identify trends and patterns in data on the effects of the global crisis on food, energy and finance on the world economy and developing countries.
- Mine and analyze data from organization databases to drive optimization and improvement of programme development, advocacy and business strategies.
- Maintains the databases needed or generated by the Technical Team, including those related to the interaction with Regional Economic Commissions and Resident Coordinator Offices
- Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
- Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize entity experiences, benefit realization and other business outcomes.
- Organizes quantitative information extracted from the web into a structured and consolidated dataset(s)
- Develops together with the graphic designer and the economists in the group, effective data visualization products to convey complex problems in a reader-friendly manner.
- Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes
- Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in data science, computer science, information management, statistics, public administration, public information, management or a related field, such as econometrics, is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management or related area is required.
Experience on data and economic analysis of global crisis is desirable.
Experience with large database management systems, including SQL or MongoDB and coding and with continuous development using Git, Jenkins, Dockers or AzureDevOps is desirable.
Experience of data Science tools such as Jupyter, Matlab, Knime, SPSS, SAS, or similar Statistical Programming Languages such as R, Python, Javascript or related is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required and knowledge of French is desirable.
