Nuclear weapons are the most destructive, inhumane, and indiscriminate weapons ever created. Both in the scale of the devastation they cause, and in their uniquely persistent, spreading, genetically damaging fallout, they are unlike any other weapons. Any use of nuclear weapons would have catastrophic consequences for mankind.

The abolition of nuclear weapons is an urgent humanitarian necessity.

Since our founding in 2007, we have worked to build a strong and powerful global movement of public support for the abolition of nuclear weapons. By engaging a diverse range of groups and working alongside other like-minded organisations and governments, we have helped reshape the debate on nuclear weapons and generated momentum toward elimination.

The Nobel Peace Prize winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a dynamic and energetic campaign coalition consisting of 650 non-governmental organisations from 110 countries around the world. A broad and inclusive campaign, ICAN is determined to mobilise civil society around the world to support the objective of stigmatising, prohibiting, and eliminating nuclear weapons.

The campaign led the ground-breaking efforts to achieve the first-ever multilateral treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was adopted at the United Nations in 2017, and entered into force in 2021.

Following the successful leadership of Beatrice Fihn, ICAN is now looking for their next Executive Director to guide and coordinate the global campaign. In addition to leading the coordination of ICAN as a global civil society partnership, the Executive Director will act as the visible spokesperson for the campaign, representing ICAN in a variety of fora, liaising with donors, and engaging with a range of audiences. The appointee will manage a dynamic and motivated staff team and oversee the development and management of budgets and business plans, overseeing the management of the ICAN staff and the ICAN head office based in Geneva.

The position is based in Geneva, Switzerland, with frequent international travel required.
