Genf, Genf, Schweiz CERN Vollzeit
Job Description

Your responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer or similar professional to join our dynamic team responsible for beam intercepting devices (BIDs) and radiation absorbers for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the analysis and design of various beam intercepting devices, including collaboration with P3 on the positron source, as well as work on collimators, MDI masks, radiation absorbers, lepton and beamstrahlung dumps, depending on the project priorities.

This role involves defining and analysing complex numerical models to assess the performance of these devices under thermo-mechanical forces, including dynamic effects. The candidate will utilise Implicit and Explicit Finite Element solvers, such as LS-Dyna and ANSYS, to conduct these analyses.

The project encompasses both simulation and practical work, including prototyping and testing activities aimed at developing and optimizing mechanical components, such as leak-tight connections (flanges, gaskets) and cooling systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and analysis of beam intercepting devices
  • Collaboration with P3 on the positron source
  • Work on collimators, MDI masks, radiation absorbers, lepton and beamstrahlung dumps
  • Development of radiation absorbers for the FCC main dipole system
  • Definition and analysis of complex numerical models
  • Utilisation of Implicit and Explicit Finite Element solvers
  • Prototyping and testing activities

Requirements:

  • Mechanical Engineer or similar, with a Master or PhD degree
  • Robust knowledge in solid mechanics, engineering materials, structural and thermal analysis by means of Finite Element Methods
  • Solid experience in 3D modeling and 2D drafting
  • Strong analytical skills to approach unstructured and multi-parameter problems
  • Familiar with metrology techniques for high precision mechanics
  • Capable of working in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams
  • Writing of technical and scientific documents
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage
