As a Restor Data Scientist, you will be responsible for developing new and innovative datasets to support the conservation and restoration communities, based on robust scientific methods developed with Restor’s science partners. You will use your analytical skills to provide insights into biodiversity, climate and socioeconomic factors at global restoration sites. Within this role you will work closely with the Product team (to make sure that datasets are fit for purpose) and the Geospatial team (to host and deliver the data).
This is a great opportunity for an experienced Data Scientist looking for new challenges that have real impact in conservation and restoration. You will work with a wide range of data science tools including Google Earth Engine, relational databases, GIS and Machine Learning. The Data Scientist will report to the Head of Geospatial.
We are offering a full time, open-ended position in an energetic start up environment and are looking for someone to start as soon as practical.
Core responsibilities:
- Analyzing **satellite (and potentially aerial) imagery** over time to produce monitoring indicators and land cover change data, e.g. showing how restoration sites and surrounding ecosystems have changed over time
- Identifying and reviewing methods for the **remote sensing of biodiversity**:
- The development of indicators for assessing restoration progress and success based on **field survey data**, e.g. bioacoustic monitoring data, LiDAR data
Other potential responsibilities:
- Contributing to the development of **tree detection algorithms** based on drone and satellite imagery (using machine learning)
- Supporting the geospatial team in aspects of relational data management and analysis including quality control and comparing scientific datasets
- Documenting and providing access to any new datasets
**We’re looking for (need to haves)**:
- 3+ years of experience in an analyst/business intelligence role (or in an equivalent academic position)
- Excellent data-handling and manipulation (ETL) skills in a range of technologies including relational databases and GIS
- Strong analytical skills in turning raw data into actionable insights
- Working knowledge of programming languages including Python
- Solid understanding of data quality issues and of tools and techniques for maintaining good data quality
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proactive, can-do attitude
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
**We’re looking for (nice to haves)**:
- 2+ years of experience in developing new methods in Google Earth Engine
- Experience in a ecology or conservation/restoration
- Working knowledge of R and Javascript
- Working knowledge of machine learning including Convolutional Neural Networks
- Experience in consuming REST Web services
To qualify for this role you need to be:
- Based in Switzerland and have a valid work permit, or
- Be an EU national willing to relocate to Zurich, or
- Be able to work remotely
