This position is located in the Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Service of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Associate Public Information Officer reports to the Internal Communications Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
  • Drafts/compiles a range of information communications products for target audiences, including for brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites/intranet, broadcast messages, infographics, etc.
  • Supports the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research.
  • Support the development of IT platforms such as web, intranets, applications or similar for efficient dissemination of information
  • In consultation with others identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
  • Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
  • Organizes or participates in the organization of meetings, events, interviews, etc.; prepares concept notes and briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
  • Responds to a variety of inquires and information requests internally; prepares related correspondence.
  • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Education


Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration computer science, information management or related field.

A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience


Applicants to positions at this level who have an advanced university degree in a relevant field of study are not required to have professional work experience.

For applicants who have a first level university degree, two additional years of qualifying work experience is required.

Experience in public information, development of IT solutions such as web, intranet and applications, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE FOR 3 MONTHS, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION SUBJECT TO THE AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS.

  • A current staff member who holds a fixed-term, permanent or continuing appointment may apply for temporary positions no more than one level above his or her current grade.

  • Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.
  • This temporary job opening may be limited to "internal candidates," who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.
  • Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
