Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. The aim of UN-Women’s engagement in humanitarian action is to ensure effectiveness in addressing gendered needs, working across the humanitarian-development - peace continuum, and embodying two approaches; i) supporting the mainstreaming of gender in the coordination, planning, prioritization, financing of humanitarian response in the immediate aftermath of emergencies and humanitarian crises; and ii) contributing to long term recovery and protection of rights of women and girls in emergencies and protracted crises through the nexus approach. UN-Women’s triple mandate of enabling gender equality and women’s empowerment through coordination of the UN system, normative and intergovernmental engagement and development-focused operational programming will significantly improve the effectiveness of humanitarian action, reduce vulnerabilities including to GBV and SEA, and aid women’s recovery. The role and expertise of UN-Women has become increasingly critical with a continuous cycle of crisis, including COVID-19 pandemic and is aligned with 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to addressing not just humanitarian assistance but root causes of crisis.

UN Women’s Humanitarian Unit of the Peace Security Humanitarian and Resilience Section promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment across the humanitarian - development nexus as a matter of rights, effectiveness, accountability and sustainability. The Office aims to accelerate transformative change through placing women’s leadership and their central role in community resilience at the core of prevention, preparedness and response efforts

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Program Specialist, the intern will join the UN Women Humanitarian Unit in Geneva to support and contribute to the following services lines:
**_ 1. Promoting Women’s Leadership, Empowerment, Access, and Protection (LEAP) in Crisis Response through:_**
- Ensuring crisis, humanitarian and stabilization planning and programming are informed by gender analysis and assessment.
- Increasing access to protection and economic opportunities for women affected by crises.
- Bridging the humanitarian/development divide in protracted crises by promoting sustainable livelihoods.
- Offering second chance educational and vocational learning for marginalized women and girls who have missed out on education, offering pathways either back into formal education or to employment or entrepreneurship.
- Supporting the development of UN Women’s Strategy on CBIs across the HDP nexus including background research, mapping of corporate practices.
- Supporting the finalization of UN Women’s Strategy on EVAW across the HDP nexus.

**_ 2. CERF Global Grant Programme:_**

Advances prevention of Gender Based Violence in emergencies and women’s leadership in humanitarian architecture through:

- Access to quality, multi-sectoral services, including legal aid to women and girls who have experienced/are experiencing GBV or are at risk of GBV;
- Reducing the risk of GBV through provision of livelihoods opportunities, cash transfers including cash for work are two key components of UN Women’s work.

**_ 3. Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC):_**
- Support UN Women’s role in IASC Task Forces on localization, HD collaboration and the link to the Peace Agenda through research, mapping of relevant initiatives and drafting of background documents as well as participation in relevant meetings/events.
- Support UN Women’s role in the IASC Gender Reference Group Task Force dedicated to advancing GE commitments through HDP actor collaboration.
