**OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME**:
The objective of the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is to foster an effective global research effort on infectious diseases of poverty in which disease endemic countries play a pivotal role. The objective of the Director's Office is to manage and coordinate external relations, governing bodies, resource mobilization, and research policy matters and to oversee all global engagement activities. This includes the mainstreaming of gender and equity considerations across the programme.

**DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES**:

- Manage and have responsibility for the progress and output of ongoing research and capacity development projects in intersectional gender research.
- Develop and establish new activities in this working area, and work on tools for mainstreaming gender and intersectionality in research activities.
- Provide leadership in conceptualizing and understanding equity as a crosscutting theme, along with gender and other social determinants of health.
- Cultivate and promote mutual learning from mainstreaming processes and alleviate barriers to mainstreaming and enable them to produce evidence-based learning as they arise.
- Manage, provide technical advice, and collaborate on the development of new innovative activities on urban health.
- Develop and establish working priorities, as well as data analysis in the area of social sciences and health economics related to vector-borne diseases.
- Collaborate across units in daily technical tasks related to Global Engagement, particularly related to gender, including follow up of projects, field site visit, organization of ad-hoc review committees and international workshops.
- Liaise with TDR staff and WHO HQ and regional office focal points on issues arising from the research projects under the incumbent's day-to-day management.
- Contribute to other TDR projects and activities as required.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.

**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education**:

- **Essential**: An advanced level university degree in economics or social science.
- **Desirable**: Postgraduate degree related to tropical diseases, gender, and human rights, international health, or international development.

**Experience**:
**Essential**:

- At least 7 years experience at national and international level designing, leading, managing, and conducting research and capacity strengthening projects related to gender, equity, and intersectionality in the control of infectious diseases of poverty.
- Experience in international public health project management in low
- and middle-income countries.
- Experience in mainstreaming gender in global health projects.
- Experience in economics related to health analysis.
- First-hand developing country work experience.

**Desirable**:

- Experience in public health policy development.
- Experience in the UN System or WHO.
- Experience in the WHO publication system, with demonstrated ability to develop guidance documents.
- Experience in environmental and social determinants of health.
- Working experience on gender and human rights related issues that have a strong impact on social factors involved in the transmission of infectious diseases.

**Skills**:

- Demonstrated track record in research in supporting and managing intersectional gender research projects and guidance materials, in particular in infectious diseases in low
- and middle-income countries.
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and advise on good practices in mainstreaming gender, equity and other social determinants of health.
- Sound knowledge of infectious diseases and their impact on vulnerable populations.
- Ability to work in a team and collaborate with other experts and colleagues.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to develop innovative concepts in a clear and concise manner.
- Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills with the ability to promote consensus and develop effective work practices and ethics.
