At Nautica Technologies, we're pioneering intelligent robotic systems for autonomous ship-hull cleaning and inspection. Based in Zurich and backed by leading venture capital investors, we work at the intersection of robotics, autonomy, and sustainability to tackle critical challenges in the maritime industry. While still operating in partial stealth, our technology is already being piloted with major shipping companies.

Role Overview

As an intern on our core engineering team, you'll tackle both the hardware and firmware that bring our underwater robots to life. You'll work side-by-side with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to design PCBs, select and prototype components, and develop embedded code that runs reliably in harsh marine environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop schematics and PCB layouts
  • Specify and source components (MCUs, sensors, power regulators, connectors)
  • Manage BOM, coordinate with suppliers for prototypes and small-batch runs
  • Assemble, solder, and debug prototype boards
  • Validate power distribution, motor-drive circuits, and battery-management modules
  • Ensure environmental robustness: waterproofing, EMI/EMC compliance, corrosion resistance
  • Write, debug, and optimize C/C++ code for microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, etc.)
  • Implement drivers/interfaces for SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, and various sensors (IMU, pressure, sonar)
  • Use and configure real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) for task scheduling and fault tolerance
  • Collaborate with software team on ROS/ROS2 nodes and data interfaces
  • Participate in lab, pool, and on-vessel trials; collect telemetry and iterate on designs
  • Document test plans, results, and design revisions

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a BSc or MSc program in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with PCB design tools and soldering lab skills
  • Familiarity in embedded C and/or C++ programming for microcontrollers
  • Familiarity with digital interfaces (SPI, I²C, UART, CAN)
  • Experience using debugging tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG/SWD)
  • Strong problem-solving mindset, proactive attitude, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative spirit

Nice-to-Have Skills & Experiences

  • Projects in underwater or harsh-environment electronics
  • Knowledge of waterproof connectors, potting compounds, and corrosion-resistant materials
  • Background in power electronics (DC–DC converters, motor drivers, battery management)
  • Understanding of EMI/EMC design practices and signal integrity on PCBs
  • Exposure to sensor fusion, SLAM, or simple control loops on embedded platforms
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux or bootloader/OTA update mechanisms
