Research Assistant on trace metal distributions in surface waters (60-80%)

Trace metals act as key micronutrients, toxins, and tracers of large-scale biogeochemical cycling. Our research targets these elements to better understand their sources and sinks in aquatic systems, their roles in shaping biological communities and biogeochemical cycling, and their potential as tools to reconstruct biogeochemical cycling throughout Earth’s history. Our research is lab and field based, and our main analytical tools are inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Our current main projects are focused on the distributions of trace metal in Arctic rivers and in testing and developing new metal and metal stable isotope proxies.

Within this context, we are looking for a scientific assistant to help in sample collection, preparation and analysis, processing of raw data and quality control assessments, and developing initial interpretations of data. The advertised position is primarily a laboratory posi¬tion, with possibility for fieldwork as well. Specific projects may include preparation and analysis of trace metal samples from rivers in Greenland, sampling, preparation and analysis of metal samples from Swiss lakes, and development of automatic sample processing procedures.
