About the Role

CERN is seeking a skilled Superconducting Magnet Engineer to join our team responsible for the design, construction, and operation of superconducting accelerator magnets. As a key member of our team, you will be involved in the development of low temperature superconducting magnet technologies, including the design and construction of specific magnets, with a focus on producing cost-effective, full-length accelerator prototypes for system integration and eventual industrialization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of low temperature superconducting magnet technologies through the design and construction of specific magnets, focusing on producing cost-effective, full-length accelerator prototypes for system integration and eventual industrialization.
  • Develop tools and solutions for low temperature superconducting magnets, in line with the experience developed for LHC and HL-LHC Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn magnets, especially for aspects related to coil fabrication and mechanical assembly.
  • Take over the responsibility for the technical coordination of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) cryo-magnets, including deinstallation, consolidation, installation activities, and related quality controls, addressing ad-hoc requests related to cryo-magnets and their spare components.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Superconducting Magnets, Applied Physics, Electro-mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in the fabrication and assembly of Nb-Ti magnets, including collaring.
  • Proven experience in the design and construction of Nb3Sn high field accelerator magnets.
  • Experience in implementing manufacturing and control procedures to ensure high quality standards throughout production of superconducting magnets.

Technical Competencies

  • Design and modelling of superconducting magnets.
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Construction, test, and installation of superconducting magnets and systems.
  • Quality management.

Language Skills

Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak in professional contexts. Ability to draw up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Ability to understand and speak, or willingness to learn and improve French.
