Multi-Trade Technician IV Refrigeration/HVAC Specialist

Job Summary:

Cornell University, a leading institution in higher education, is seeking a highly skilled Multi-Trade Technician IV to join its Buildings and Properties Unit (B&P). As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for providing expert maintenance and repair services for refrigeration and HVAC equipment across the campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced to intermediate installation and repair of refrigeration equipment, including scroll type compressors, DX compressors, condensing units, evaporators, electric and steam defrost, and piping repairs.
  • Recover and store refrigerant, prepare documentation and records of refrigerants, and ensure compliance with University, State, and Federal requirements.
  • Apply cooling tower experience to meet operational needs and diagnose problems and alarms from the Building Automation System (BAS) to recommend repair of HVAC equipment.
  • Maintain water-cooled refrigeration systems during power outages and act as a subject matter expert advising and providing guidance and support to other staff on Refrigeration and HVAC issues.
  • Identify necessary parts and supplies needed to complete a task and work with the shop lead to develop a plan or procurement for Refrigeration and HVAC equipment.
  • Collaborate with other tradespeople, such as engineers, mechanics, and lab technicians, to complete projects and repairs.
  • Accurately record hours worked and materials used, update job statuses, and pertinent information related to jobs in Cornell's computerized maintenance management system (MAXIMO).
  • Learn and follow safety and work environment regulations, policies, and procedures, including ARC flash prevention and protection, lead, asbestos, fall protection, confined space, and others as required.
  • Acquire and maintain licenses and/or special knowledge to maintain equipment as required.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and follow OSHA lockout/tag-out and other related safety procedures.
  • Consistently follow guidance and best practices regarding working safely and use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed to resolve urgent campus refrigeration issues.
  • Identify and recommend updates or improvements to refrigeration configurations and systems.

Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree with college coursework in Building Trades Construction, or trade associations training and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination (High School degree with 5-7 years experience).
  • Discipline expert, 5-7 years of experience working in an industrial facilities or manufacturing environment as a refrigeration technician on air-cooled and water-cooled equipment, from 1 ton to 75 tons.
  • Minimum 1-year trades HVAC-R training required. Must understand superheat and subcooling theories and obtained through a formal training program.
  • Familiarity with electrical circuits to perform trouble shooting and diagnostics.
  • Braze line sets, make flare tubing connections as needed for new installation and repair.
  • Inspect refrigeration systems components performing routine and preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain required knowledge of applicable safety and code compliance regulations and requirements.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to use computer for communications, time entry, scheduling access, product research & online trainings.
  • Well-organized and ability to multitask.
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed to resolve refrigeration issues.
  • Ability to work independently to perform new installs, routine maintenance, and repairs.
  • Operate and maintain trades equipment; strategically select most appropriate equipment to complete task.
  • Ability to wear safety equipment such as a respirator.
  • Respond to work orders and requests to perform maintenance activities.
  • Willingness and ability to stay current with industry developments and advancements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and undergo a successful driver background check and employment background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years' experience in Refrigeration/HVAC in a large-scale maintenance environment.
  • Heat Pump experience with machines greater than 25 tons.
  • Familiarity with research laboratory wiring and electrical planning.
  • Knowledge of Automated Logic Control (ALC) WebCTRL programming and control systems is a plus.
  • Trained in use of forklift and elevated platform.
  • Ability to participate in Cornell's Respirator use program.
