About the Job

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is seeking a highly skilled Photonics Integration Engineer to join our team.

Company Overview

CERN is at the forefront of particle physics research and technology. Our mission is to push the boundaries of human knowledge and understanding of the universe.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for co-packaging Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) with Electronic ASICs and detector elements. This involves mastering the connection of optical fibers to the PIC as well as high-speed electrical signals for connection to the ASIC.

We are looking for an engineer or applied physicist who can apply their existing knowledge to this unique problem area. You will learn to use industry-standard fiber alignment systems and conceive and construct assemblies of co-packaged photonics and electronic circuits.

You will also learn about mechanical and thermal constraints of the final co-packaged assemblies to define implementation. Additionally, you will assess the suitability of the co-packaging solution for the environment inside a typical CERN detector, taking into account aspects like radiation tolerance and outgassing of materials.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Proven experience in Silicon Photonics Technology
  • Experience working in a laboratory with instrumentation used to characterize electronic and photonic circuits
  • Proven experience working in a team
  • Desire to find practical solutions to problems in close collaboration with colleagues and external partners
  • Fluent in English
Benefits
  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax)
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse, and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child, and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract
  • 30 days of paid leave per year
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French
