About the Role

This position is located in Europe and Central Asia Section/Americas, Europe and Central Asia Branch/Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Europe and Central Asia Section.

The primary responsibility of this role is to support the implementation of human rights mandates, focusing on thematic and country-specific issues. This includes planning and coordinating activities, conducting research and analysis, collecting and analyzing data, and representing UN human rights programs at meetings. Additionally, the successful candidate will contribute to capacity-building efforts, provide technical assistance, and collaborate with other stakeholders to advance human rights in the region.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent analytical and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of human rights principles and international law. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups are essential for success in this role. The selected individual will also have experience in supporting human rights mechanisms and field experience in human rights is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this position include:
  • Supporting the development and implementation of human rights strategies and plans;
  • Providing technical assistance to governments, civil society, and other stakeholders on human rights issues;
  • Conducting research and analysis on human rights issues, including identifying and addressing emerging challenges;
  • Collaborating with other UN agencies and organizations to advance human rights and achieve sustainable development goals;
  • Representing UN human rights programs at meetings, conferences, and other events.


Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or related fields;
  • Experience in supporting human rights mechanisms, such as treaty bodies, special procedures, or national human rights institutions;
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to write clear and concise reports and presentations;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups;
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required; knowledge of French or Russian is desirable.
