Technical Robotics Expert for Drone Research and Development

About the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled Robotics Engineer to join our Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics (LSR) team. As a world-leading group, we focus on developing novel, biologically inspired flying robots for distributed sensing in air and water and autonomous robotic construction for digital infrastructure systems. Our lab is based on a jointly funded Professorship by Empa and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and specializes in robot design, hardware development, and multi-modal robot mobility.
Your Key Responsibilities- Design and Develop Novel Robotics Systems: Collaborate with academic staff and researchers to develop cutting-edge robotics and AI systems, characterize them in testing labs, and implement them in the field.
- Lab Facility Management: Maintain and manage the lab facilities and associated equipment, including drones, motion capture systems, and security infrastructure.
- Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Perform regular inspections, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and software used in the arena.
- Support Research Activities: Assist academic staff, researchers, and students in setting up experiments and tests within the lab.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure that the facility complies with all health and safety standards and regulations, carry out risk assessments, and develop safety procedures.
- User Training and Support: Train users in safety protocols and emergency procedures, coordinate access for visitors, external collaborators, and industry partners, and maintain accurate records of facility usage, incidents, and equipment inventory.
- Funding and Outreach: Support funding applications, publications, outreach, and project proposals related to facility development or drone research.
Candidates should hold a degree (BSc, MSc, or higher) in a relevant discipline such as robotics, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Key skills include experience with aerial robotics systems, knowledge of motion capture systems, flight controllers, and simulation software; programming languages like Python, C++, or MATLAB; basic electronics and mechatronics understanding; and familiarity with safety standards relevant to drone operations and testing environments.
