Overview

">

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is on a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.

We are seeking an Electronics Engineer to join our team in developing a next-generation data acquisition board for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The CMS experiment requires processing collisions between proton bunches at up to 40 MHz, generating immense data rates. Our level-1 trigger employs custom firmware logic in hundreds of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), selecting promising events in microseconds for data acquisition and further analysis.

We are upgrading the trigger and data acquisition systems for the future high-luminosity phase of the LHC. As part of this effort, we aim to develop a novel data acquisition board based on the latest generation FPGAs and high-speed network technology.

This project is part of the NextGen Triggers initiative, a collaboration between LHC experiments and CERN's Research and Computing Departments to push forward innovative Artificial Intelligence technologies and high-performance computing architectures.

Job Description

You will be responsible for designing the concept, schematics, and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout for the new data acquisition board, as well as manufacturing and testing the first prototypes.

You will also support the development of firmware for the board and its integration in the L1 Data Scouting demonstrator system.

In addition, you will provide day-to-day supervision of students working on the project and collaborate with personnel and students from the CERN CMS L1 trigger and data scouting groups.
