Job Description

Are you an electronics enthusiast with a passion for hardware and software? Do you want to contribute to the success of CERN's High Energy Physics experiments by providing a high-quality rental service of electronic instrumentation equipment? Then consider joining the Electronics Pool team in the Electronic Systems for Experiments group and take on new challenges.

The Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) group of the Experimental Physics (EP) department designs and maintains electronic systems and components for the experiments at CERN. It also provides several services for the electronics community. One of these services is the CERN Electronics Pool which evaluates, purchases, rents, calibrates, maintains and supports a wide range of modular electronics equipment and instrumentation for short to medium term use in physics experiments.

As an electronics technician, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality and availability of general laboratory instrumentation on loan to groups building High Energy Physics experiments at CERN. You will test, qualify and evaluate equipment, build up and maintain test benches and develop procedures to test the range of instruments under your responsibility. You will develop software applications for automated test rigs as well as results visualization, analysis and archiving. Finally, you will provide technical support to physicists, engineers and technicians coming to CERN from all over the world and renting equipment from the Electronics Pool.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Testing modular electronics, instrumentation and power supplies, identifying faults and, in some cases, carrying out firmware and hardware fixes,
  • Designing, developing and maintaining hardware and software for test benches for laboratory instruments, optoelectronics and modular electronics,
  • Actively participating in the identification/evaluation/qualification of new equipment types,
  • Giving direct technical support to service users including occasional on-site investigations, and ensure the link with manufacturers for fault follow up,
  • Writing up detailed test procedure documentation as well as test reports,
  • Actively participating in the testing, integration and improvement of the new enterprise asset management tool used in the Electronics Pool service.
  • Participating in the daily operations of the service, including maintenance, service reception and stock related logistics.

Requirements:

  • Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics or a related field.
  • Extensive experience and interest in the electronics field, ideally in the testing, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment including modular electronics and instrumentation,
  • Proven experience in a user support service or a customer-oriented service,
  • Demonstrated experience in developing Python based test software,
  • Initial experience with high and low voltage DC power supplies,
  • Initial experience with the use of ERP/EAM tools and databases and/or SQL databases.

Technical Competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques
  • Installation, operation and maintenance of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems
  • Selection and application of modular high-voltage power supplies: , as well as low-voltage power supplies,
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: development of Labview and/or Python applications,
  • Configuration and use of information management systems: eRP/EAM suites and databases

Behavioural Competencies:

  • Demonstrating Flexibility:
    • Adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements;
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge:
    • Seeking feedback from colleagues and other stakeholders about ways of increasing competence;
  • Communicating Effectively:
    • Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented;
  • Managing Self:
    • Working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting;
  • Working in Teams:
    • Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships,
