About Us

At CERN, we are pushing the boundaries of human knowledge by probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Our state-of-the-art instruments allow us to study the basic constituents of matter, providing insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

We are seeking an Applied Physicist with expertise in beam-beam and dynamic aperture optimisation to join our team at CERN. In this role, you will work closely with our Accelerators and Beam Physics Group to develop and implement strategies to enhance the performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and study sorting scenarios for new HL LHC magnets, focusing on prioritization of transfer function errors and field quality.
  • Monitor and assess the quality of magnets in terms of transfer function and field quality, informing their allocation and impact on the machine's dynamic aperture.
  • Use the outcomes from these studies to explore HL LHC operational scenarios, including dynamic aperture, luminosity levelling strategies, filling schemes, and crab cavities configuration.
  • Analyse the effects of various parameters, such as measured field quality, sorting scenarios, beam-beam effects, and octupoles, on beam halo formation.
Requirements
  • A Master's degree or PhD in Applied Physics or a related field.
  • Proficiency in optics design, numerical tools (Python), non-linear beam dynamics, and incoherent effects.
  • Familiarity with CERN's environment and infrastructure is advantageous.
About the Role

This is a 24-month contract with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum. You will be part of our dynamic and diverse team, working closely with subject matter experts to drive innovation and progress. If you are passionate about advancing our understanding of the universe, we encourage you to apply.

What We Offer
  • A competitive salary range of CHF 62,000 - 68,000 per year, depending on your qualifications and experience.
  • CERN's comprehensive health scheme, covering yourself, spouse, and children.
  • Membership in the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Installation grant, family, child, and infant allowances, payment of travel expenses, and 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job training and formal courses in English and/or French.

Please note that the salary range may vary based on individual circumstances.
