Job Title: Applied Physicist for Beam-beam and DA Optimisation

Job Summary:

We are seeking an Applied Physicist to join our team at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for optimizing the dynamic aperture (DA) and beam-beam collisions of the HL-LHC. Your expertise in non-linear beam dynamics and incoherent effects for synchrotron rings and colliders will be instrumental in shaping our future research directions.

Responsibilities:
  • Study and improve magnet field quality (FQ) and sorting activities to optimize DA and beam-beam collisions.
  • Follow up on the quality of magnets (transfer function and field quality) to define their slot allocation and assess their impact on the machine DA.
  • Use the outcomes from sorting scenarios and slot allocation to study HL-LHC operational scenarios in terms of DA, including beam-beam effects and overall machine settings.
  • Analyze the impact of various parameters on beam halo formation.

Requirements:
  • Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • Fluent in English; ability to work in French is an advantage.
  • Professional background in Applied Physics or a related field.

What We Offer:
  • A competitive monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Installation grant; family, child, and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
