The position is located in the Statistics Service of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Statistician reports to the Chief of Statistical Analysis Unit.

**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

- Organizes, designs, plans and carries out the extraction, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data on transport costs related to international merchandise trade. This is done by selecting methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases.
- Participates in the development, implementation and management of a new statistical database on transport costs related to international merchandise trade.
- Provides training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information, particularly on trade and transport data.
- Participates in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research on transport costs, related emissions and a global trade nowcast using transport data.
- Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports.
- Organizes and participates in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person.
- Guides, trains and supervises general service staff and consultants.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or related area is required.

Experience in developing economic databases and nowcasting methodologies is desirable.

Experience in working with international trade data is desirable.

Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Special Notice
This is a project funded position. The duration of this temporary job opening is starting as soon as possible through end of May 2023.

Subsequent to the initial temporary appointment, new and successive temporary appointments may be granted for service in the same office or in a different office any number of times, for any duration, provided that the length of service does not exceed the period of 364 calendar days.
