Job Description

Your responsibilities

In this position, you'll have the unique opportunity to work on a project on which two groups, the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics (BE-CEM) and the Beam Instrumentation (SY-BI) groups, collaborate.
The CEM Group is responsible for development and maintenance of controls hardware and low-level software, electronics design, production and radiation tolerance, mechatronics and robotics, test and measurement systems for the accelerators complex. The BI Group is responsible for designing, building and maintaining the instruments that allow observation of the particle beams and the measurement of related parameters for all CERN accelerators and transfer lines.

As an Electronics Engineer, you will work for the distribution and recovery of Beam Synchronous Timing for Beam Instrumentation in the CERN accelerator chain.

In particular you will:

  • Take part in the development of FPGA designs that distribute Beam Synchronous Timing;
  • Study and improve the accuracy and precision of FPGA designs that recover Beam Synchronous Timing;
  • Work with the White Rabbit technology and in particular RF over White Rabbit;
  • Develop test setups and conduct performance characterization;
  • Collaborate closely with firmware and software engineers;
  • Document designs, testing procedures, and operational guideline.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Experience with the development of complex FPGA designs including DMA, Multi-Gigabit Transceivers, integration with the SoC Processing System;
  • Experience with the development of testbenches for FPGA designs;
  • Experience with the development and debugging of low-level C for embedded systems;
  • Knowledge of analysis and debugging techniques for FPGA designs;
  • Knowledge of Python for hardware testing would be an advantage;
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Electronic engineer (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
