Duties and Responsibilities
Implementation of the landmark African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement is expected to boost intra-African trade significantly. This potential, however, will not be realised without measures to support Africa's private sector to take advantage of preferential market access under the Agreement. For almost sixty years, the International Trade Centre (ITC) has enabled MSMEs in developing economies to become more competitive and connect to international markets. To upscale support to African businesses under the AfCFTA, in 2020, ITC launched a new corporate programme called "One Trade Africa" (OTA) to empower, enhance and enable African MSMEs, women and youth entrepreneurs to access new and transformative market opportunities created by the AfCFTA. In 2025, the Office for Africa will implement a new project called Africa Trade Competitiveness and Market Access" (ATCMA). Funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by ITC and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), this four-year programme aims to improve market access for specific value chains and increase the export competitiveness of African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in these sectors. The umbrella programme is structured around two intervention levels: 1) the Continental Component and 2) Sub-regional Components in five regional economic communities (RECs): COMESA, EAC, ECCAS, ECOWAS and SADC. A critical objective of the Continental Component is to ensure coherent and consistent communications across the ATCMA programme maximising linkages between the REC-level and AfCFTA messaging.
