What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Your purpose

You are accountable for how the ICRC targets, reaches and drives engagement with key audiences and online communities through social media, messaging apps, influencers, and other channels - ultimately converting them to take the desired action in support of our institutional priorities. You will also ensure the ICRC is continuously adapting and innovating in its approach to digital communications and is best-in-class.

Your accountabilities and responsibilities

You’re in charge of setting the strategy, direction and KPIs for how the ICRC uses social media and messaging apps to achieve our institutional communication objectives - and ensuring we reach them.
You’re accountable for safeguarding the ICRC’s reputation within social media and messaging apps and will provide strategic guidance and practical support to tackle any reputational crisis, including to management.
You’ll work with Operations, Legal, Policy, HR marketing and Communications counterparts to define key audience groups, understand their behaviours and preferences, and design targeted approaches and content to reach the “think, feel, do” objectives.
You’re responsible for driving the growth, reach and engagement of our largest and most influential global social media channels - in English, French and German - and setting and sharing best practices for all other channels around the world to follow.
You’re in charge of putting in place a strategic framework for how the ICRC uses social listening to understand key audience’s communication interests, shape editorial and content decisions, identify potential proactive conversation opportunities, and manage reactive issues.
You’re accountable for defining the strategy, user journey, development and execution of the ICRC’s global communication and fundraising campaigns through social media and messaging apps (both organic and paid) - and ensuring they’re successful.
You’ll drive ICRC’s approach to engaging social media influencers, and will ensure influencer communications are integrated into all our activities and campaigns, including building a network of influencers that the ICRC can tap into.
You’ll ensure the right tools, training and reporting processes are in place to measure the impact of our influencing, engagement and fundraising activities/campaigns on social media and messaging apps, and to implement learnings and adjust best practise.
You’ll develop and test a customer service approach to how ICRC engages with and responds to the community-driven conversation online, both proactively and reactively.
You’ll drive our approach to testing, iterating and learning with everything we do in social media and beyond, with an eye to jumping on new trends and cultivating an innovative mindset, including championing discussions on how we define success and how we learn from failures.
You’ll engage with colleagues across the ICRC and make sure we take a diverse, participatory and inclusive approach to how we talk about and represent people affected by conflict and other situations of violence in our external digital communications.
You’ll build, equip and lead a team of social media and digital experts in Manila and Headquarters (HQ). You’ll be responsible for defining team goals, individual objectives, and ensuring their success. You’ll also be responsible for building an inclusive, supportive and empowering working environment.
You’ll oversee the budget for social media engagement, social listening, influencer engagement and other projects.
Your scope & impact

You’re our lead expert on social media and messaging apps, and your remit is global.
You’ll manage four roles at HQ and three in Manila, plus provide “blue line” functional support to the Digital Officers in our Regional Communication Centres (RCCs) and guidance to the Digital Officer function globally.
You’ll help drive and set Communication strategies to digitally position the ICRC, as well as support the prioritisation of people affected by conflict as a key audience for Communications.
