What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The ICRC Staff health manager (medical doctor responsible for ICRC personnel in the field) oversees all Staff health activities in one specific country. You manage a team of medical doctors and nurses locally hired (Staff health officers) and receives both Regional and Headquarters technical support.

Your role

Implement ICRC Staff health strategy in all sites of one specific country
Carry out health briefings for all newly employed ICRC staff and expatriates arriving in the country
Assess and mitigate health risks linked to living conditions in remote sites, in particular, to prevent illness and promote good standards of general hygiene (i.e., housing, use of mosquito nets when indicated, use of water filter, hygiene standards of cooks and cleaners, nutritional advice)
Ensure appropriate case management of ICRC staff with physical or mental health problems, including indication for repatriation on medical grounds (‘Medevac’ or follow-up on-site on the medical problem until resolution
Act as a focal point for the organization and coordination of repatriation on medical grounds (‘Medevac’ of ICRC staff
Assess the quality of medical services provided by the referral structures selected for the treatment of ICRC staff
In collaboration with management and logistics, develop, update and implement the country's medical contingency plan
Provide direct medical advice following critical incidents in the field and follow up in case further intervention is required
Provide support to the crisis cell during critical events and incidents (abduction, death, and other casualties of staff in the field)
Set up means to prevent and contain outbreaks of communicable illness amongst ICRC staff
In collaboration with the ICRC Staff MHPSS team (mental health and psychosocial support), implement prevention activities according to the ICRC Staff health strategy
Collect accurate and monitor data pertaining to illnesses, accidents, and professional diseases, with a view to providing anonymized data for HR and management in full respect of medical confidentiality
Support the management with recommendations on issues related to the health and well-being of the staff in the country

**Your profile**: Education and experience

At least B2 level in English
B2 in French and/or Arabic would be an asset
Medical degree (title of specialist) in general medicine, internal medicine, or equivalent
Additional training or experience in tropical medicine, travel medicine, public health, or occupational health is an asset
Clinical experience of at least 2 years after specialization
International experience in 2 different continents is highly desired
Capacity to supervise other members of the medical team
Assertiveness and negotiation skills are important
Good knowledge of the ICRC
Computer literacy

**Annual paid leave**: 20-27.5 days
