About CERN

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. By using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the fundamental structure of the universe.

The High Field Magnet Programme

In the framework of this programme, research is ongoing to develop innovative cryogenic cooling schemes for superconducting magnets operating at a wide range of temperatures. This aims to drastically reduce the helium inventory, making these new cooling options more efficient.

Your Mission

You will be responsible for designing, commissioning, and operating a dedicated experimental setup to test these cooling options. Your task will be to validate thermohydraulic models in a small-scale but representative environment, using input from HFM cooling studies.

Requirements
  • Experience in setting up experimental test stations
  • Good understanding of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics
  • Knowledge of cryogenics/low temperature physics would be an asset
  • Ability to create technical drawings in a CAD environment would be a plus
  • Project coordination in multidisciplinary and international teams
  • Problem-solving and analytical mindset
  • Effective communication and presentation abilities
Benefits
  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax)
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract
  • 30 days of paid leave per year
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French
