PhD Researcher in Control for Advanced Manufacturing

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated doctoral student to contribute to our research effort in control for advanced manufacturing. The envisioned research will address the following key areas:

  • Online Learning-based Control

    The successful candidate will work on developing online learning-based control methods for advanced manufacturing systems, leveraging techniques such as Reinforcement Learning, Online Convex Optimization, and Iterative Learning Control.

  • System-level Hierarchical Controller Optimization

    The researcher will focus on optimizing system-level hierarchical controllers for industrial systems, utilizing bilevel, on-line, and differentiable optimization methods.

  • Control and Task Planning

    The candidate will work on control and task planning for advanced manufacturing using domain knowledge and expert feedback, employing methods from domain adaptation, transfer learning, and large-language models.

  • Digital Twin-based Learning and Optimization

    The successful researcher will develop digital twin-based learning and optimization methods for manufacturing processes such as 3D Printing, laser cutting, precision motion, and robotic manipulation, utilizing machine learning, federated learning, and optimization techniques.

Key Responsibilities

The doctoral student will be responsible for:

  • Translating research ideas into tangible projects, in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team.

  • Supporting master students in their research projects.

  • Publishing research findings in scientific journals.

  • Participating in conferences and workshops.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, with strong programming, modeling, and data analysis skills in Python and machine learning/optimization libraries. Excellent spoken and written English skills are also essential for navigating our international environment.
