The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Economy Division works with International and nongovernmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements. Located within the United Nations Environment Programme's Economy Division, the Resources and Markets Branch seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development. Over the past years, the focus of Resources and Markets Branch has been UNEP’s work related to Green Economy.
Infrastructure is inextricably linked to a Green Economy transition and is central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The socio-economic Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be achieved without trillions of dollars of infrastructure investment, and if this infrastructure development is unsustainable, it will undermine the achievement of the environmental SDGs. Incorporating environmental, social, and economic sustainability into infrastructure planning and development is therefore a critical component of the 2030 Agenda. This was recognized by Members States at the 4th UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), where they passed a resolution on sustainable infrastructure which highlighted its importance to sustainable development and pointed to the need for more integrated approaches to the planning and development of sustainable infrastructure.
In 2018, the ETFU established the Sustainable Infrastructure Partnership (SIP) as a platform to promote and support integrated approaches to sustainable infrastructure planning and development. Integrated approaches recognize the centrality of infrastructure to the 2030 Agenda, and can help deliver optimal environmental, social, and economic outcomes of infrastructure development by considering the complex interlinkages between different infrastructure systems, sectors, phases, governance structures, and aspects of sustainability. In collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders, the SIP provides knowledge, facilitates international collaboration, and supports capacity-building at the country-level to foster systems-level approaches, which more fully exploit the complex interlinkages between infrastructure and the SDGs.
This recruitment is for two internship positions within RMB’s Economic and Trade Policy Unit, one to start in June and the second one in September. Please indicate your availability.
The Economy Division/ UNEP RMB internship is for six (6) months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned
**Responsibilities**:
The intern will contribute to the RMB’s work on inclusive green economy and sustainable infrastructure, including supporting related activities under PAGE, the SIP and related activities.
More specifically, the job will entail one or more of the following tasks:
- Assisting in preparing concept notes and short briefings in the above-mentioned area;
- Carrying out background research, including data collection and draft inputs to support the development of working papers and studies related to PAGE, SIP activities;
- Reviewing and commenting on research products and supporting their publication;
- Assisting with the implementation of research projects and country-level implementation of the above-mentioned projects, including outreach to and coordination with national partners and governments;
- Assisting in organizing and preparing supporting materials for key stakeholder meetings;
- Assisting in preparing communication material and supporting outreach activities;
- Assisting in organizing and planning for workshops and round tables related to the above-mentioned areas; and,
- Supporting other activities as requested.
