The Secretariat of the Bank for International Settlements’ Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) is hiring an experienced economist with knowledge of the economics of digital currencies, payment systems and the structure of the monetary and banking system.
**Purpose of the job**:
The mission of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is to support central banks' pursuit of monetary and financial stability through international cooperation, and to act as a bank for central banks.
At the CPMI, we underpin this mission by serving the global financial community as an international standard setter that promotes, monitors, and makes recommendations about the safety and efficiency of payment, clearing, settlement and related arrangements, thereby supporting financial stability and the wider economy.
The payments landscape has undergone significant technological transformation in recent years. The pace of change and potential for disruption to traditional payment, clearing and settlement systems have propelled digital innovations in payments to the top of policymakers’ agenda. In the role of experienced economist, you will be contributing to analysis and research at the core of this transformation.
**By joining the CPMI**:
- You would be joining a dynamic, diverse and highly engaged team. The CPMI Secretariat team supports the unit and various international working groups under the CPMI.
- You will gain first-hand experience in how the global regulatory community monitors, identifies and analyses emerging policy issues related to digital innovations in payment, clearing and settlement.
- By joining the team as an experienced economist, you will be interacting with other experienced economists and technical experts within and outside the BIS. You will have opportunities to produce analytical notes for the CPMI and their working groups, to support the drafting and publication of CPMI reports, and to conduct research work on topics of policy relevance to the CPMI and BIS.
**Principal accountabilities**:
- Defines and carries out high-quality policy analysis and research in digital innovation as it relates to payment, clearing and settlement systems, including emerging issues in central bank digital currencies and stablecoins.
- Monitors and analyses developments in digital innovation as it relates to payment, clearing and settlement systems.
- Provides secretariat support for the CPMI and its working groups and task forces.
- Contributes to regular BIS publications, such as the Annual Economic Reports and Quarterly Reviews.
- Provide analytical input on digital innovation in payments to meetings of the CPMI as well as BIS management, including the preparation of background documents and reports.
- Establishes and maintains professional contacts and effective communication within the BIS, with the central banking and regulatory communities, and with selected market participants, industry groups, and academia.
- Organises the preparation, publication and distribution of reports drawn up by the CPMI or its working groups.
- Represents the BIS and the CPMI in meetings hosted by central banks and at other international organisations. Gives presentations on the work of the CPMI at seminars and conferences.
**Qualifications, experience, and skills required**:
- PhD in economics or finance and a proven track record in high-quality, policy-relevant research.
- Knowledge of relevant areas of economics, including banking, monetary economics, industry organisation and economics of networks/platforms.
- General understanding of the mechanics of financial market infrastructures (FMIs) and strong interest in relevant industry developments, including in digital innovation and information technology.
- Expertise and experience with issues related to digital currencies, payment instruments and systems and the structure of the monetary and banking system.
- Excellent drafting and communication skills in English for both technical and non-technical audiences.
