**PhD Student in Urban Animal Geography (80%)**

The Department of Geography and Sustainability is an interdisciplinary community of about 130 scholars working on space, place, and the environment. With 27 professors and more than 60 postgraduate students, the Department offers a vibrant and stimulating environment for cutting-edge research. It hosts regular lecture series and distinguished visiting scholars from around the world.

Job title: PhD Student or Graduate Assistant (in French: assistant-e diplômé-e)
**Start date: 1 march 2024**
Duration of contract: 1 year, renewable twice for 2 years, for a maximum of 5 years
Activity rate: 80%
Location: Geopolis Building, Lausanne, Switzerland

**Your responsibilities**:

- Discourses, strategies and regulatory practices associated with unwanted animals in the city;
- Cohabitation with non-human species (particularly arthropods) in indoor urban spaces (e.g. flats, hospitals, schools, libraries);
- Knowledge and governance of animals in the city.

This PhD thesis will be carried out under the supervision of Joëlle Salomon Cavin. A collaboration is planned with the Naturéum/Museum cantonal des Sciences naturelles de Lausanne.

**Your qualifications**:
Master's degree (or equivalent) in Human Geography or another field relevant to the position with an interest in issues and approaches addressed in Environmental Geography, Sociology of Science, Urban Political Ecology, Animal Studies or Cultural Geography. A background in Biology with a proven interest in social sciences and urban studies may also be considered.

Language skills in French and English are expected (French is the working language at UNIL and the language of Joëlle Salomon Cavin's teaching).
