The IGD brings together some 130 members working in the fields of geography and sustainability, combining the humanities and natural sciences. With 27 professors and MERs and over 80 PhD students and post-docs, the IGD offers an international, interdisciplinary, and stimulating environment conducive to high-level research. It regularly hosts renowned conferences and researchers from all over the world.

**Description of research / Your activities**:
There is a great emphasis on renewable energy communities and/or collective self-consumption as two key-strategies to implement a just renewable energy transition. While economic and technical dimensions are studied, social dimensions of these ECs as innovative tools and socio-legal institutions, that includes as governance, socio-technical changes continue to remain uncertain thus hampering their reinforcement as transition tools. The overall aim will be to understand main opportunities and limitations and bring a critical perspective to strengthen the debate on how to design and achieve a just transition through community energy actions.
The PhD-student will be invited to empirically investigate these certain innovations such as new forms of governance, social configurations, social aspects linked to acceptance, social capital and community empowerment, and supportive policies through qualitative research in the context of specific regions in Global North and Global South. We foresee a cross-continental and cross-national, comparative case-study analysis of social innovations across energy communities, i.e. innovating how inhabitant use energy, and how this interacts with climate transitions. Geographic context lies in Switzerland, the EU and however specific attention will be given to experiences in more locations in Global South, specifically in Sub-Saharan Africa. In combination with the in-depth theoretical and empirical work, the PhD-student is encouraged to engage with societal actors through transdisciplinary inquiry and action research.
**Your profile**:
- Completed or nearly completed a master’s degree in geosciences (geography, environmental sciences), social sciences, African Studies;
- Proven knowledge of energy policy; socio-technical transformations; energy and social innovation; energy communities, renewable energy;
- Good knowledge of qualitative methods (e.g. interviews) and quantitative methods (e.g. techno-economic) would be an asset;
- Language skills in French (French is the language of instruction at UNIL, as well as the main way of interaction within the IGD) and English are expected. German would be an asset.
