The PositionAs a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of CMI2O (cardio-metabolic, immunology, infectious diseases and ophthalmology), you will focus on an ambitious exploratory research project aiming at establishing an in vitro platform for monitoring human podocyte function in health and disease states, amenable for phenotypic screening and deep knowledge generation. This work directly contributes to Roche's goal to preserve renal function in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
The University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) is Roche's academic partner for this Postdoctoral Fellowship. The partnership with Academia will provide further insights into fundamental podocyte biology and signaling pathways and will provide access to complementary research tools including mouse models.
In this position you will:
- Ensure the design, development, execution and implementation of scientific research in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team.
- Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential development of novel therapies for patients with diabetic kidney diseases.
- Maintain substantial knowledge and know-how of state-of-the-art principles and technologies.
- Analyze data using appropriate statistical methods and present data in a professional format suitable for external publication.
- Work closely with the Roche Institute of Human Biology (IHB), an organization within pRED whose goal is to harness and advance the use of human model systems in drug R&D.

The RPF Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.
The duration of the RPF project is initially set for two yrs, with the possibility of extension for a third year. You will be based in Basel, Switzerland.
Requirements:
You have a Ph.D. degree in cell biology or a related field, with a strong background in kidney health and diseases. You completed your Ph.D. studies not more than 4 yrs ago.
Furthermore, you also have experience and expertise in the following:
- Mammalian cell culture and primary cell isolation, including podocytes.
- Molecular biology and gene editing techniques.
- High-resolution and high-throughput imaging, data visualization and quantification, advanced statistical analyses
- Scientific writing and presentation skills, documented by publications in high-impact journals or other key contributions.
You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.
When does it start?
The planned start of this fellowship is November 2024.
