ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT


The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) of the Union which deals mainly with ICT-focused development policies, strategies and programmes, as well as technical cooperation activities, to promote digital inclusion and drive digital transformation at community, country and regional levels.

To effectively and efficiently serve the needs of ITU members,
BDT is organized into four functional areas:

  • Office of the Deputy to the Director and Field Operations Coordination Department
  • Partnerships for Digital Development Department
  • Digital Networks & Society Department
  • Digital Knowledge Hub Department

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Special Initiatives is a portfolio of ITU development initiatives which cut across multiple thematic priorities.

Special Initiatives focus on developing global partnerships and aim to catalyze a transformational approach to improving connectivity and digital transformation.

Special Initiatives include Giga, Connect2Recover, Partner2Connect and ITU-FCDO.


Giga is a joint initiative of UNICEF and ITU to connect every school in the world to the Internet by 2030.

ITU is partnering with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)

Digital Access Programme on a digital inclusion project in five countries:
Kenya Nigeria, Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa.

The Junior Project Consultant will support headquarter activities and the coordination of global activities.

TERMS OF REFERENCE:

Under the supervision of the FCDO Programme Officer, and in close coordination with the Head of Special Initiatives, the Junior Project Consultant will provide project support to Giga and FCDO related to school connectivity activities

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Support ongoing work of Giga and FCDO by assisting in preparing materials for publication, project management support, coordination of country activities, provide technical support as appropriate, and preparation of materials for weekly updates.
  • Provide support to Giga through attending meetings, ensuring Trello is kept up todate, liaising with UNICEF, and contributing to weekly updates.
  • Evaluate processes, anticipating requirements, highlighting areas for improvement, and proposing solutions.
  • Maintain project reporting activities, monitor project schedules and deadlines, and identify potential issues or risks that could affect the progression of projects and communicate these items to the Programme Officer, and work to identify potential solutions.
  • Prepare and organize meetings and workshops, in collaboration with colleagues; draft agenda and invitation letters; coordinate with host country; prepare documentation for different services; coordinate with conference services for Geneva based meetings; review text contributions to the meeting and provide minutes.
  • Provide internal coordination support to Special Initiatives by assisting in preparation of documents, talking points, speeches, financial reports, weekly
    BDT highlights and project updates, and complete relevant administrative work as needed.
The above tasks may be adjusted, based on Giga/FCDO project priorities as they evolve.

All of the above will also need to be done in close coordination with the ITU FCDO team, the ITU Giga and UNICEF Giga team counterparts.

  • Preparation of materials for publication and materials for weekly updates for Giga and FCDO.
