Director of Development

The Job's Mission


The Director of Development is the senior fundraiser within the IMD development team reporting to the Chief Development and Alumni Relations Officer.

This individual is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and closing of major gifts to IMD.

They will proactively manage a portfolio of donors and prospective donors and execute prospect strategies leading to solicitation and investment in the Institution.

This individual has responsibility for meeting all specific revenue and activity goals established in consultation with the Chief Development and Alumni Relations Officer (CDARO).


This role involves managing complex relationships and priorities across a matrix of departments demanding diplomacy and strategic thinking in order to ensure effective delivery of fundraising targets in the service of the strategic development priorities of IMD.


Key Activities & Accountabilities

  • Actively manages a portfolio of approximately 70 prospects and secures philanthropic support at the highsix and sevenfigure levels.
  • Conducts 60+ donor visits per year.
  • Leads regular prospect strategy sessions to drive gift closures at six and sevenfigure levels, ensuring that philanthropic potential is optimized through the development of appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Working with the CDARO, prepares and drives detailed annual and multiyear plans for all areas of major giving, and prospect management and research including goals, timelines, budgets, and strategic and tactical approaches.
  • Provides regular reports to CDARO on program performance, fundraising progress, and progress against goals.
  • Lead the creation of strategic donor solicitations plans, and drives the successful execution of those plans.
  • Track all prospect and donor engagement/activity in Sales Force Advancement, IMD's CRM system
  • Partner with individual faculty members on strategic development initiatives
  • Particpates in developing donorcentric communications such as case statements, proposals, and other materials.
  • Participate in the development of a volunteer pipeline and recruitment of volunteers.
  • Evening and weekend work, and extensive travel are required.
  • The appointee will also be expected to carry out such other duties as their manager may from timetotime request, commensurate with the level and responsibilities of the post.

Education & Exeprience

  • 3+ years related experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Understanding of, and passion for, the role and value of Higher Education in society
  • Required bilingual English, German, and/or French.

  • Demonstrated ability in securing major grants and gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other private funding sources.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and implementing long
- and short-range development initiatives in conjunction with strategic planning processes.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles.
  • Ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives.
  • Database management skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to development activities, and to use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers, and others.
