The World Economic Forum, committed to improving the state of the world, is the international organization for public-private cooperation. The Forum engages the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) is a multistakeholder platform hosted by the Forum that aims to shape a more sustainable and inclusive world by ending plastic pollution. It works through both a global and national platform, bringing together public, private, and civil society leaders to develop joint solutions to the plastic pollution crisis, which are both pragmatic and ambitious.
**Why we are recruiting**
The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) at the World Economic Forum is seeking a proactive and skilled Plastic and Biodiversity Specialist. This role is crucial for advancing GPAP’s mission to end plastic pollution and enhance ocean and terrestrial biodiversity in critical hotspots globally. The specialist will play a key role in GPAP’s efforts to connect the biodiversity and plastic pollution agendas by informing decision-making, increasing investments, and supporting local biodiversity efforts through our National Plastic Action Partnerships. This role will include programme management, national assessment development and stakeholder engagement.
**Reporting lines and interactions**
The Plastic and Biodiversity Specialist will be based at the World Economic Forum’s Geneva office, within the Global Plastic Action Partnership team, reporting to the Metrics and Impact Measurement Lead. Internally, this person will work closely with colleagues in GPAP and in the Nature Action Agenda teams.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Develop Biodiversity Assessments: With the support of the Policy Lead, Nature Action Agenda and local Biodiversity Advisors, lead the coordination and delivery of national assessments to identify the impact of plastic pollution in selected ecosystems and key biodiversity areas within our national partnerships.
- Support Local Organizations: Lead programme management for the delivery of capacity-strengthening grants to local informal economy and biodiversity organizations, enhancing their ability to address plastic pollution and biodiversity conservation challenges.
- Coordinate and support Local Biodiversity Advisors: Work alongside local Biodiversity Advisors in each country, aiding them in championing biodiversity and linking the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) with local biodiversity stakeholders.
- Facilitate Cross-Sectoral Dialogues: Organize cross-sectoral dialogues at global and national levels to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration.
- Primary point of contact with key consulting partners: This includes monthly strategy meetings and weekly check-ins to ensure consultants deliver high quality assessments and provide tailored local support to the NPAPs within budget and timelines agreed.
**Preferred requirements:**
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Public Policy, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of five years of experience in environmental policy, biodiversity conservation, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the dynamics of Multilateral Environmental Agreements including the negotiations for a global plastic treaty and the Global Biodiversity Framework
- Strong project management skills and experience in leading multi-stakeholder initiatives.
- Excellent analytical abilities and proficiency in creating impactful reports and presentations.
- Superior communication skills, with fluency in English. Additional language skills relevant to the focus countries are advantageous, in particular Spanish.
- Ability to understand stakeholder needs and build relationships across cultures.
- Team player, able to work with colleagues across the organization.
