Trainee AI-driven liquid Handler Copilot

Männedorf, Switzerland

Your contribution

In this role, you will join a pioneering project to develop an AI-powered lab assistant capable of designing and executing automated experiments on Tecan liquid handling robots. Your work will help enable intuitive, intelligent workflow creation for protocols such as sample handling, PCR, pooling/normalization, NGS, DNA extraction, and dilution. Responsibilities include:

• Developing a high-level Python interface to control Tecan robots, building on top of the PyLab Robot library or existing native interfaces

• Designing a translation layer between experimental workflows and Tecan's proprietary scripting language to enable seamless robot motion planning

• Training AI models to translate experimental designs into executable robotic protocols

• Working with protocol datasets and leveraging large language models or code-generation models to produce reliable and safe automation scripts

• Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver robust, user-friendly solutions for laboratory automation

Your background

• You are currently pursuing or have completed a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Robotics, AI/ML, or a related field

• You have a strong foundation in Python programming and are comfortable working with transformer-based models such as those from OpenAI or Anthropic

• You are familiar with robotics control, automation, or motion planning, and have an interest in laboratory automation and biotech

• You enjoy working with code-to-code generation tasks and are eager to apply AI to real-world challenges

• Experience with laboratory automation systems or the PyLab Robot library is highly valued

• Knowledge of C++ and/or C# and an understanding of lab protocols will help you excel in this role

• You communicate effectively in English and are able to present technical concepts clearly; German language skills are an advantage

• You are a strong team player with excellent communication and technical presentation skills
