Deputy General Manager

The mission of the BIS is to support central banks' pursuit of monetary and financial stability through international cooperation, and to act as a bank for central banks. Our head office is in Basel, Switzerland, and we have two representative offices: in Hong Kong SAR and in Mexico City, as well as Innovation Hub Centres around the world.

It is the role of the Deputy General Manager to deliver that mission by assisting the General Manager in the management of the Bank and acting as their deputy; they will represent the BIS at the most senior levels amongst the central banking and financial supervisory communities. In addition, they will have overall responsibility for the Bank's risk management and ethics and conduct functions and have oversight of the Bank’s finance operations. Together with the General Manager they will lead the Bank’s Executive Committee (ExCo) and contribute to the strategic planning and general management of the BIS.

**Purpose of the job**:
The Deputy General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements performs the following key roles:

- As stipulated in the BIS Statutes, “assist the General Manager in the management of the Bank and will exercise the responsibilities of the General Manager in his (her) absence”.
- Effectively represent the BIS at the most senior levels amongst the central banking and financial supervisory communities.
- Have overall responsibility for the Bank's risk management and ethics and conduct functions, and have oversight responsibility of the Bank’s finance operations.
- Together with the General Manager lead the Bank’s Executive Committee (ExCo) and contribute to the strategic planning and general management of the BIS.

**Principal accountabilities**:

- Work in close coordination with the General Manager and, in his/her absence, manage the BIS successfully and chair and guide the Bank’s top management group.
- Chair economic discussions and meetings of central bank Governors and senior experts from central banks with efficiency and impact.
- Officially represent the BIS in its international environment and negotiate effectively with the Bank’s counterparties.

**Operational activities and oversight**:

- Responsibility for all aspects of the Bank’s risk management and ethics and conduct functions.
- Oversight and follow-up of the Bank’s finances.

**Member of the Bank’s Executive Committee**:

- Strategy development and management of Bank-wide initiatives.
- Contribute creatively and collegially to the development of strategies and policies for the BIS.
- Take innovative approaches to promoting the Bank’s future development as a global institution.
- Chair Bank-wide committees and working groups.

**Qualification**:

- An excellent academic track record with a postgraduate degree (master’s degree or PhD) from a university of international standing.

**Work experience**:

- Experience as a Governor or Deputy Governor at a central bank or equivalent position at an international financial organisation.
- A visionary leader with a track record of setting and implementing strategy and transformation.
- Fully familiar with issues faced by the global central banking and financial supervisory/regulatory community and must possess analytical skills and in-depth knowledge of macroeconomic and financial stability issues.
- Strong experience in issues related to risk management, accounting and auditing.
- A proven track record of delivering excellence through others and leading diverse, high performing institutions.
