Intern - Information Systems & Communication

The internship is located in in the Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) secretariat of the Sustainable Transport Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva.

**Responsibilities**:
The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the Sustainable Transport Division on one or more of the following activities, depending on priorities and skills/competencies of the intern, as follows:
a) Participation in finalizing the eTIR specifications v4.3 and preparation of version 4.4 - Attend the intergovernmental meetings of the Technical Implementation Body (TIB). Contribute in reviewing and preparing the documents to be submitted to TIB for review. Liaise with the IT Team and suggest improvements on the automated production mechanism of the documentation assets.
b) Participation during the conformance tests.
c) Participation in improving the eTIR data model - Contribute in refactoring the structure of the eTIR data model to improve its consistency. Work with the IT Team Lead ad propose suggestions for further improving the eTIR data model and its automated consistency mechanism.
d) Participation in the improvement of the Test coverage of the eTIR international system and/or of the International TIR Data Bank (ITDB) - Design and implement new test cases. Monitor the regular execution of test cases and investigate execution failures. Liaise with the IT Team to find the best way to correct problems.
e) Participation in the development of the non-repudiation system of the eTIR international system - Study the requirements and the complaints procedure. Draft proposals for use cases in designing a user interface. Contribute in designing and implementing this user interface.
f) Participation in the improvement of the Communication efforts of the TIR secretariat - Contribute to the current communication efforts. Study existing data and list potential inconsistencies and errors. Prepare data visualization reports. Propose suggestions for improvement.
g) Participation in the Logging system of the eTIR international system - Study the existing system. Monitor logs and identify potential problems. Liaise with developers to find the best way to correct problems. Suggest improvements to the IT Team.
h) Participation in the improvement of the deployment procedures of the eTIR international system - Liaise with the IT Team to automate and improve the procedures followed to deploy the new versions of the eTIR international system on the various environments. Contribute in investigating and testing containers or orchestrations techniques.
i) Participation in Information Security related aspects - Study existing security controls and UN standards. Contributes to the improvement of these security controls. Suggest improvements terms of Information Security to the IT Team.
j) Assist in other activities of the Division such as technical moderation of virtual / hybrid meetings with interpretation.

Education

To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
For this internship, studies in information technology, computer science or equivalent are required.

Knowledge of Java or any other object oriented programming language is desirable.

Knowledge of XML is desirable.

Knowledge of SQL is desirable.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
