What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Financial Controller is responsible for the financial management/controlling of the headquarters, Funds & Foundations and innovation budgets. They support the Head of Financial Controlling in all financial aspects of the unit’s responsibilities. They also help or lead projects to optimise business processes within the Finance and Administration Division at headquarters.

Main duties and responsibilities

Maintain financial oversight for the headquarters, funds and foundations and innovation budgets through having or being:
Responsible for the financial controlling, including the definition of the financial budget, expenditure reviews, forecasting and liaison on financial, administrative matters with budget owners.
Play a lead role in the annual financial planning/budgeting & forecasting process on headquarters, Funds & Foundations and the innovation budgets (end-to-end from the computation of envelopes, instructions, input collection to presentation to decision-making bodies) for corporate budgets.
Provide to the Head of Corporate Finance & Controlling all financial & economic analysis to support the Platform for Organization and management to take strategic decisions, specifically around financial steering/growth prioritization and optimization / strategic development.
Contribute to enhancing and automating existing financial and management reporting tools and financial analysis.
Support the Head of Financial controlling in producing the Financial Statements for the directorate and other governance bodies.
Lead specific change initiatives to improve the financial literacy and budget accountability of cost centres and or budget owners.
Lead selective projects aimed at optimizing business processes within the financial division.
Challenges the status quo to identify areas of optimization.
Scope and key relationships

Internally, manages a small team and interacts with budget owners and collective bodies such as the Platform for Organization and Management.
The role is with a global remit and reports to the Head of Corporate Financial Controlling.
Externally, interacts with external auditors and authorities (e.g. EY, the Foundation for Buildings for International Organizations (FIPOI) and supports the Head of Corporate Finance with the statutory boards and management of third party legal entities associated with the ICRC).
Education and experience required

Typically 10+ years of professional experience, with a background in a senior controlling capacity on a global or regional scale, with a track record on performance improvement, corporate restructuring, and/or reorganization & optimization.
Experience of 3 to 5 years in an international non-profit or multinational corporate environment.
A relevant Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's or MBA is a plus.
Proven capacity to manage a diverse team, with a strong emphasis on people management and excellent interpersonal skills.
Solid financial knowledge analytical skills combined with precise planning project management capacity, focusing on delivering results.
Exposure to fixed and intangible asset budgeting, project management framework, IFRS, and proven practice in financial & project controlling.
Fluent in English and/or French with working-level knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

Computer proficiency with interest in information system and IT projects and exposure to ERPs, Tableau, SharePoint, etc.
Available for field missions (in case of fixed asset purchases).
