Job Description

We are seeking a motivated engineer who is eager to join our dynamic magnetic measurement team as an Engineer for Field Magnetic Measurements and Modeling. As an engineer in the magnet group (TE-MSC), you will learn and conduct magnetic measurements on both normal and superconducting magnets. In this role, you will be designing, developing, and implementing systems and instruments used for measuring, characterizing, and analyzing magnetic fields, the quality of which is critical for applications related to particle accelerator machines. Your responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Electronic/Electrical, or Computing engineer eager to learn and join our dynamic magnetic measurement team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing systems and instruments used for magnetic field measurements, characterization, and analysis, particularly in magnetic applications for accelerator machines.

Responsibilities

Magnetic Field Measurement:

  • Design and perform magnetic measurements for various applications, including accelerator magnets and magnetic materials;
  • Develop and optimize procedures for measuring static and dynamic magnetic fields, particularly for hysteresis compensations;
  • Developing predictive models that learn from historical data to make future predictions or classifications.

System Design and Development:

  • Develop and integrate electrical systems for magnetic measurement setups, including sensors and calibration;
  • Work on signal conditioning, data acquisition, and processing techniques to improve measurement precision.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Analyze magnetic measurement data, identifying patterns, anomalies, and performance characteristics;
  • Provide detailed reports and visualizations to support R&D, production, or testing teams.

Testing and Validation:

  • Implement quality control and assurance processes to ensure the reliability of magnetic measurements;
  • Analyze large datasets to extract meaningful insights and patterns for AI applications.

Your profile

  • Hands-on experience with data acquisition systems, including configuration, calibration, and integration with various sensors and instrumentation.
  • Skilled in operating related hardware for real-time data collection, signal conditioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in selecting and implementing appropriate data acquisition techniques for specific applications, ensuring accurate and reliable data capture.
  • Proficiency in signal processing techniques and tools, including filtering and noise reduction techniques.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience with AI frameworks.
  • Knowledge of supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques and experience with model training, optimization, and evaluation.

Skills

  • Sensors, measurement techniques, and analog and digital signal processing knowledge.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C++ and Python.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Electronic/Electrical/Computing Engineer (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
