Job Description

Your responsibilities

The Large Hadron Collider, CERN's flagship accelerator, is undergoing a major upgrade known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), for which new high-field superconducting accelerator magnets are required.

As an early career Mechanical Engineer working in the Technology department (TE), Magnet Superconductors and Cryostats group (MSC), in the large magnet facility, you will join the team in charge of the construction of the new magnets and cold masses required for the HL-LHC upgrade.

The focus will be on the fabrication and analysis of the inner triplet (or low-β) quadrupole magnets (MQXF), based on Nb3Sn superconducting technology, with a conductor peak field of 11.3 T, the longest Nb3Sn accelerator magnets designed and manufactured up to now, with a magnetic length of 7.2 m.

The program has now entered the series production phase, during which 10 magnets will be built.

Your main responsibilities in this role will be:

Follow mechanical aspects during assembly and loading of MQXFB magnets. This includes performing numerical computations with finite element models (ANSYS) to analyze strain gauge measurements and participate in the analysis of the test results, with a leading role in the mechanical analysis of these magnets; Conduct and analyze geometrical measurements on coils, magnets and cold masses, including the alignment of the magnets within the cold mass; Perform systematic analysis of the production data, providing valuable input for the design and construction of future high-field accelerator magnets; Assist the engineer in charge in overseeing the magnet assembly and cold mass construction activities; Perform magnetic simulations (ROXIE / OPERA 2D and 3D) or multi-scale modelling, depending on the project needs.

Your profile

Skills

Experience with Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS); Experience in the magnetic and mechanical design of systems and comprehensive knowledge of the associated methodologies; Experience in engineering documentation and data analysis; Ability to work in multidisciplinary and international teams; Fluent in English.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a . By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation,   and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or related field. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible. Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 8 January at 23h59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Field of work: Mechanical Engineering

What we offer

A monthly stipend ranging between 5134  and 5647 Swiss Francs (net of tax) . Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund . Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract. 30 days of paid leave per year . On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
