Junior Algorithm Developer Intern

Join our dynamic team at SOPHiA GENETICS, a leading innovator in the field of data-driven precision medicine, as an Algorithm Developer Intern. Over 30% of staff at SOPHiA GENETICS hold PhDs. You will be joining a small team of experts specializing in the research and development of cutting-edge software solutions for accurate detection of large structural variants from Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data.  Your mission: Gene fusions are the driver mutations in 10% to 20% of cancer cases. Correctly identifying such fusions often has substantial therapeutic implications. SOPHiA GENETICS has developed leading algorithms for detection of gene fusions from DNA (hybrid capture or whole genome) and RNA sequence data, for a variety of clinical applications. This internship will contribute to this effort. By joining us, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the research and development of state-of-the-art tools at the cutting edge of the field, with impact on research and clinical applications worldwide. You will be involved in:  NGS data exploration to gain initial insights, for example through testing the analytical performance of existing algorithms.  Technical analysis, through statistical models, to evaluate the limits of analytical performance and how it may be improved.  Evaluation of the technical feasibility, by developing prototype algorithms, of such improvements.  Critical evaluation and management of the day-to-day running of the project, including documenting the performed activities Presentation of results to members of the team/department/senior management.  What will you learn:  How to work with real-world NGS data, including BAM files and structural variant analyses  Familiarization with products and analyses used in clinical genetics DNA and RNA panels somatic and germline applications Data exploration, statistical analyses, and visualization techniques  Software development: Contribute to software development with industry-level standards How to contribute to scientific innovation within a matrix organization  Best practices for communicating complex results to technical and non-technical audiences  Requirements The experience you bring:  PhD in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Biology, Data Science). Exceptional applicants with, or pursuing, a Masters degree will also be considered.  Excellent analytical and algorithmic skills, with strong appreciation for statistics and probability  Some experience in manipulating NGS data (bam files)  Knowledge of programming, ideally in R and/or C++ Proficiency in English (spoken and written)  Independence and experience in driving research projects Good teamwork and collaboration skills  Good communication and presentation skills  Benefits You will be joining an organisation with the patient at the heart of every decision and action, driven by purpose as we pursue exponential growth.
