Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Communications Manager and Officer to join our team at Medecins Sans Frontieres. As a key member of our communications team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing our communications strategy, advising on positioning, and identifying opportunities to communicate our mission and values.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communications Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with our organization's goals and objectives.
  • Media Relations: Handle local and international media requests, and proactively contact local media to promote our organization.
  • Event Management: Organize events with key local media, including press conferences and press briefings, and facilitate media and photographic visits to project sites.
  • Media Monitoring: Monitor and report on local media, flagging significant articles, trends, and news of importance to our organization.
  • Reporting: Produce strategic reports on the local media landscape, including key media, audience members, and political affiliation.
  • Spokesperson: Act as a spokesperson during emergencies to alleviate high media pressure.
  • Social Media: Manage and monitor our social media network accounts, producing and disseminating content, and moderating online engagement.
  • Communication Tools: Produce and/or coordinate the production of communication tools and products, including PRs, leaflets, brochures, posters, radio spots, articles, photos, and videos.
  • Training and Development: Train relevant members of project teams on how to communicate externally, and identify human resources needs for communications, hiring where relevant, and managing, coaching, and developing direct reports.
Requirements
  • Education: Degree in journalism, communications, humanitarian affairs, political science, or another related subject.
  • Experience: At least four years' previous international work experience in communications, journalism, or public relations, and at least one year's experience working in developing countries or unstable contexts.
  • Skills: Ability to source, identify, and analyze relevant and key operational information, explaining its context and translating it for use in communications materials; social media skills, including community management and identification of networks; knowledge of audio-visual skills, including creation and production of tools; IT skills, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; and native English speaker or track record of English editing, with fluency in any other language a considerable asset.
  • Availability: Available for a minimum of six months.
  • Commitment: Commitment to our organization's work and values, with a strong team player approach, experience in people management, strong negotiation skills, and a diplomatic approach.
