Job Summary

CERN is seeking a skilled Mechanical Technician to join its team in the construction of cryogenic assemblies. As a key member of the CMI section, you will be responsible for constructing and assembling cryo-magnets and superconducting devices for particle accelerators and test stations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Construct and assemble cryo-magnets and superconducting devices for particle accelerators and test stations.
  • Contribute to development programs and prototyping activities in relation to the engineering and construction of cryo-assemblies.
  • Manufacture mechanical and sheet metal parts, as per drawings and bespoke in some cases, in view of their integration in cryo-magnets and superconducting devices.
  • Produce, install, and commission bespoke tooling for the construction and assembly of cryo-magnets and superconducting devices.
  • Oversee welding activities carried out in the section and, according to needs, execute welding operations on stainless steel piping of a few millimeters thickness.

Requirements

  • Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in mechanics, manufacturing techniques, and assembly of complex systems to tight tolerances.
  • Demonstrated experience in conventional mechanical machining (turning, milling) of parts, as well as shells forming (rolling, folding machines) or forming of metal precision pipes.
  • Experience in the development of first-of-a-kind systems, which require the construction of mock-ups and dedicated tooling.
  • Experience in the fabrication and assembly of vacuum vessels and cryostats would be an asset.
  • Experience in welding technology, particularly TIG welding applied on stainless steel piping, would be a plus.
  • Basic experience with Computer Aided Design software such as AutoCAD, Catia or SolidWorks, would be an advantage.

Technical Competencies

  • Construction, test, and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts: and machining (conventional lathe and milling machine).
  • Reading of 2D drawings and 3D models, including ISO-GPS dimensioning and cabling diagrams.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal and pipe forming techniques.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Demonstrating Flexibility: Demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change.
  • Demonstrating Accountability: Working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises; Presenting information accurately and objectively.
  • Working in Teams: Understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information; Cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals.
