PhD Position in Computer Science for Circular Construction and Sustainability

About the Role

The selected candidate will be involved in developing a new service for circular information management for construction elements and reality capture in existing buildings using computer vision and machine learning. This innovative project operates at the intersection of computer science, civil engineering, and architecture, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of sustainable construction practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop both theoretical concepts and practical tools for the construction sector, in collaboration with industry and research consortium partners in Switzerland.
  • Explore implementation possibilities, validate, and test proposed and developed solutions in pilot projects.
  • Engage and collaborate with stakeholders, including construction companies, standardization bodies, consultants, and other industry partners, to promote the adoption of developed tools.
  • Participate in research activities, including publishing scientific papers and presenting findings at conferences and workshops.
  • Supervise Master and/or Bachelor students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields, and Master in computer science, architecture, engineering (civil, environmental), or life cycle assessment with strong IT skills.
  • Strong research skills with an understanding of circular economy practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in data analysis and database management, optimization, platforms, and marketplace development, computer vision, and machine learning.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively, while also fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English, enabling effective collaboration and the preparation of scientific publications and reports.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. The ability to work with industry partners in German is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a team and together with industry partners.
  • Take initiative, be results-oriented, organized, and creative.
