Job Description

The Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross) is part of a worldwide community assisting victims of conflicts and disasters and people affected by social or health-related crises. The Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement provides vulnerable people with assistance and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.

The German Red Cross assists in disaster response, rehabilitation, and capacity-building projects on appeals of their sister organizations within the Movement. To further increase its capacities to provide emergency response, GRC plans to expand its Global Surge Team.

The Global Surge Team is part of the Operations & National Society Cooperation Department in the International Cooperation Division of GRC, made up of highly trained professionals ready to be deployed anywhere in the world at short notice. The team's main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Deploying in emergency response missions with the GRC, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), or the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • Providing logistics support services to emergency operations in terms of procurement, warehousing, reporting, administration, transport, and fleet management depending on the Mission Instructions of the respective operation.
  • Setting up and/or reinforcing GRC's operational logistics structures.
  • Supporting logistics preparedness activities of GRC and the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement Partners.
  • Supporting the development of GRC's logistics capacities and global response tools.
  • Supporting the GRC rollout of Microsoft Dynamics 365 as GRC Enterprise Resource System (ERP).
  • Strengthening the capacity of GRC logistics delegates and GRC local logistics staff by training and contributing to increased ownership and expertise in logistics management of GRC projects.
  • Undertaking specific projects or tasks, including training design, support, delivery, and facilitation, as defined by the Surge & Readiness Unit.

The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in logistics in either a commercial, military, or humanitarian environment, including 2 years of experience in working in humanitarian operations. A good understanding of the different elements of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement and global response tools of IFRC and ICRC is required. Experience in the procurement of goods, services, and construction works, as well as warehousing and fleet management, is also necessary. Fluency in English and German is essential, and other languages are an advantage. The ability to work effectively in multicultural environments and adhere to the Red Cross/Red Crescent Fundamental Principles is also required.
