**Presentation**:
We are seeking a full-time PhD student to join the Environmental Fluid Mechanics laboratory, led by Professor Pietro de Anna, at the Institute of Earth Science (University of Lausanne, Switzerland). This post is fully founded (gross salary of about 50,000 CHF per year) by the Swiss National Science foundation.

**Job information**:
Expected start date in position : 01.01.2024 or upon mutual agreement

Contract length : 1 + 1 + 2 years (maximum 4 years)

Activity rate : 100 %

Workplace : lnstitute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environment, University of Lausanne.

**Your responsibilities**:
The advertised position is to join a strong and growing Environmental Fluid Mechanics group.

85 % will be dedicated to research on a PhD thesis on the role of porous system physical structure affecting the development of biofilm architectures, under dynamical flow conditions. This will be achieved using novel microfluidics devices (fabricated with ad-hoc materials including optode sensors). Particular attention will be devoted to study the role of resources limitation (e.g. nutrients and electron acceptors, as oxygen) on the spatial structure of growing sessile bacterial colonies within confined micro-structures to understand how resources get limited by growing bacterial colonies and how this affects their spatial organization. The candi
- date will be trained in cutting-edge microfluidics and time-lapse video-microscopy techniques. The research work will involve collaborations with a suite of international colleagues across Europe and the US.

15 % will be dedicated to teaching assistance and master students supervision.

**Your qualifications**:
Master degree (or be near completion) in Microbiology, Microbial ecology, Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering or related discipline with a strong background on microbiology of bacterial suspensions and/or biofilms. Knowledge of optical microscopy, image processing and microfluidics (use and fabrication) is recommended, but it is not necessary (advanced training will be provided).

Written and spoken English are required, while working knowledge of French (the local language of Lausanne) is not. Interest in developing microfluidics based experiments and optical techniques to investigate flow and transport on microbially-driven processes in confined media (e.g. colloids/microbes filtration, biofilm growth).
