Home Office, Schweiz The New Humanitarian Vollzeit

**Hours and status: Full time (40 hours/wk), permanent**

**Salary: Competitive, based on experience**

**Start date: June 2023**

**Location: Remote, with availability during standard CET business hours**

Humanitarian needs and costs are shattering records again in 2023, and The New Humanitarian is seeking a second policy reporter and editor to hold the aid sector to account and challenge assumptions around improving the lives of people facing hunger, displacement, the impacts of climate change, and other crises around the globe.

The New Humanitarian puts independent journalism at the service of the millions of people affected by humanitarian crises. We are the only non-profit newsroom dedicated to global coverage of crises. Our journalists report from the frontlines of conflicts and disasters in some 70 hotspots around the world to drive more effective prevention of and response to crises. Our on-the-ground reporting and expert analysis and commentary inform policy-makers, practitioners and donors; amplify the voices of those at the heart of crises; and act as a watchdog to hold the aid sector accountable to its staff, its donors (including taxpayers around the world), and the communities it serves.

As staff reporter and editor, policy, you will join our non-profit newsroom to ensure that we continue to stay one step ahead of aid policy trends and developments that impact some of the biggest issues of our time. The expertise you bring - whether as a reporter or editor with deep knowledge and contacts acquired in a financial, diplomatic, development, technology or other beat or as a former aid professional - will uncover what’s working in humanitarian aid and what could work better. You will routinely help expose outdated practices and highlight new ways forward. You will be hungry for the quick-turn-around “scoop” that a contact or a close read of public documents can spark; you will be equally committed to longer analyses and innovative multiplatform content that allow aid sector professionals and mainstream readers to confront hard questions, debunk long-held assumptions, and consider how aid can better serve communities in need.

You will join our small, passionate team working at the nexus of some of the world’s most urgent challenges. You will also contribute to building a more equitable, inclusive model of world-class journalism and helping some of the world's most vulnerable people improve their lives.

This role could well suit a journalist with experience covering any of a wide range of humanitarian or humanitarian-adjacent topics - from finance to philanthropy to climate change - who is eager to focus that knowledge on humanitarian policy and practice. It could also suit a former aid professional who is ready to put their inside, hands-on knowledge of the sector to use as a reporter and editor.

Help us achieve our vision of providing the world’s best journalism about the world’s toughest crises and setting the agenda in the interest of those most affected.

You will work alongside our current full-time Policy Editor and part-time Policy Editor-at-Large. You will identify humanitarian policy trends and developments, devise coverage plans, and commission and edit work from contributors in addition to doing your own reporting.

You will work from the desk and, from time-to-time, from humanitarian crisis situations or aid sector convenings. You will expand your networks with key stakeholders and influencers both within the traditional aid sector and outside it - including private business, volunteers and philanthropists, grassroots organisations, academic and research groups, etc.

At TNH, we are committed to decolonising our journalism and seeking new ways of reporting and storytelling. You will contribute to this goal by identifying contributors who bring diverse perspectives on policy and/or contributors who bring expertise relevant to humanitarian policy that is lacking among our current staff.

**As Staff Reporter and Editor, Policy, key responsibilities include**:

- Staying one step ahead of humanitarian policy trends and developments to inform TNH coverage priorities and advise newsroom colleagues on the policy implications of breaking news and emerging trends
- Looking for new, unusual or newsworthy developments across a wide range of technical, specialist and academic literature, social media feeds and monitoring services
- Tapping your networks and knowledge of aid policy and funding practices to find scoops - big and small - from within the humanitarian and adjacent sectors
- Devising, pitching, and filing for publication news; analysis; explanatory and enterprise features; data visualisations; Q&As; surveys and other forms of content on humanitarian policy trends and developments
- Commissioning and editing coverage from freelance journalists and other contributors, including reports from the field and desk-based analyses
- Travelling to crisis zones to report on policy
