Radiation Studies for Lhc Dump Upgrade

vor 4 Wochen

Geneve, Schweiz CERN Vollzeit

**Job Description**:
**Your responsibilities**

You will join the Accelerators Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the accelerator beam-related technical systems. This position is located in the Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) where you would join the team which is responsible Beam-Machine Interaction studies for all CERN accelerators and future accelerator projects.

In the High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) era (from 2029), the LHC beam dump needs to safely absorb ~700 MJ of stored beam energy. The present beam dump has been designed for much lower beam intensities and needs to be upgraded in order to safely dissipate this vast amount of energy.

In the position, you will:

- perform FLUKA particle shower simulations for the beam dump system, which are essential for the redesign of the dump;
- contribute to the simulation studies for a beam irradiation experiment in the HiRadMat facility, which is fundamental for probing the robustness of possible dump core materials;
- regularly exchange with beam physicists and engineers in charge of the beam dump design.

**Your profile**

Skills and/or knowledge
- Experience with simulation of radiation environments;
- Knowledge of particle-matter interactions;
- Knowledge of programming techniques and languages (i.e. bash, python);
- Knowledge of at least one Monte Carlo code (FLUKA, etc.) is an asset;
- Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- You have a professional background in Applied Physics (or a related field) and have either:

- a **Master's degree with 2 to 6 years** of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a **PhD with no more than 3 years** of post-graduation professional experience.
- You have never had a fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date**:22.08.2023 at 12:00 AM (midnight) CET.**

Job reference: SY-STI-BMI-2023-89-GRAP

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Target start date: 01-December-2023

**What we offer**
- A monthly stipend ranging between **6194 and 6808 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax)**.
- Coverage by CERN's comprehensive **health scheme** (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN **Pension Fund**.
- Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
- ** 30 days of paid leave per year**.
- On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
